Wizardly Magic Overview

This campaign uses a "verb-noun" magic system loosely derived from 2nd edition Ars Magica. Magical abilities are divided up into several arts, the most significant of which are the 9 forms (nouns) and 4 techniques (verbs). In such a system, a wizard's ability to cast, e.g., a fireball is based on his ability with the "Create" technique and the "Flame" form.

Spellcasting, of course, draws upon the world's Chaotic energies and a careless mage may find himself tainted by them, leading to magical catastrophes and even Chaotic mutations.

Spells may be learned from grimoires, invented through long research, or created spontaneously at need. Learned spells may, through repeated use, be mastered. Learned spells are (generally) more effective than those made up on the spot and are much safer to use. Mastered spells are safer still.

Some wizards may choose to join the Imperial Color Colleges and learn to handle magic in a more focused (and more powerful) manner. Stronger chromatic mages are even able to increase the flow of power through an area, making more available for all nearby wizards - save those of their inferior college, whose abilities are dampened by the influx of magic which they cannot manipulate.
